It’s the largest city and of course the capital of Sierra Leone, West Africa. It’s population is around 1.2 million and it’s also a port city on the Atlantic ocean; Freetown is located in the western part of the country. The city is not only the economic, financial and cultural center of the country but is also home to significant number of ethnic groups. The native language is Krio. The Fourah Bay College, one of the country’s main universities, is also situated in Freetown.

Freetown has a tropical climate with a rainy season. Dry season lasts from May till October. But in the beginning of rainy seasons, strong thunderstorms are expected. Average temperature ranges in Freetown are from 21 °C to 31 °C all year.

Freetown can be reached in from around 28 locations in UK and Ireland with airlines such as British Midland Internamtional (bmi), Brussels Airlines, KLM,Air France, Kenya Airways and Royal Air Maroc.

Lungi International Airport serves Freetown and the rest of Sierra Leone. It is located in the city of Lungi, Port Loko District, across the river from Freetown. Lungi International Airport serves as the primary airport for domestic and international travel to and from Sierra Leone.

Other modes of transport include train, bus, taxi, boat and car with various economical choices and packages.

Entry Requirements - Visas

All British nationals require a visa to enter Sierra Leone. Visas must be obtained before arrival. In the UK they can be obtained from theSierra Leonean High Commission in London.

Anyone travelling to Sierra Leone to visit friends or relatives should ensure they have the correct travel documentation before they travel.

The minimum passport validity requirement is one year.
